Is your equipment in a sealed enclosure? Does it live outdoors? Check out the "Outdoor Box" calculator on CoolingZone. This calculator will give you the average temperature of the air inside the box as well as surface temperatures, provided you supply it with some key information: size, heat load, heat transfer coefficients inside and out, solar loading, radiative properties and ambient temperature. Call or e-mail if you need help determining any of those.

Calculators for spreading resistance are located on the University of Waterloo Microelectronics Heat Transfer Lab (MHTL) web site. This series is for isoflux rectangular or strip sources on either a simple or compound base. The "isoflux" designation means uniform heat flux, an assumption that seems reasonable for chips -- although the power dissipation within the chip isn't really distributed uniformly. The actual distribution isn't something most chip suppliers are willing to tell you (if they know it at all; it probably varies with the task the chip is performing). more...

Are you using perforated metal venting in your system? Have a look at the Industrial Perforators Association Perf Handbook. There are pages on pressure drop of air and water through perforated plate, and EMI shielding effectiveness as a function of perforated plate thickness. Their Acoustics Handbook covers how perf works with other absorptive materials to transmit or absorb noise. Alas, it doesn't cover any acoustic effects of vents...
